Opportunities for outdoor recreational activity abound in this three-county region. Fishing is excellent at the local rivers and lakes. The area offers the avid sportsperson all-season hunting, with some of the best pheasant hunting available in North Dakota. Grouse, trophy whitetail, mule deer, antelope and waterfowl round out the local hunting opportunities. For those who would rather use a shovel than a gun to bag a trophy, the area is internationally renowned for its unique geology and paleontology group that offers opportunities to participate in on-going digs. Premier golfers will enjoy two local courses in Bowman and Hettinger. We're within a days driving distance to the Black Hills and the National Grasslands, skiing in nearby Montana, visits to Mount Rushmore, gambling in Deadwood, South Dakota or camping and hiking in Yellowstone National Park.

Whatever your heart desires, it can be found within the borders of Bowman County.

Golf: Bowman County is proud to be the home of two golf courses, the Sweetwater Golf Course south of Bowman and the Scranton Community Golf Course located on the west edge of Scranton. The Sweetwater Golf Course is a nine-hole, links-style course with undulating fairways. Golfers are drawn to the facility due to its exceptional grass greens. Play is from April to September.

The Scranton Community Golf Course is also a nine hole course, whose sand greens were replaced by artificial greens in the early 1990s. The par 34 Course stretches over 2300 yards of carefully maintained native grass in a rolling setting.

Camping & Water Sports: The 1,740-acres v-shaped Bowman-Haley Lake offers year round recreational opportunities. Three recreation areas were developed which attract campers, boaters, fishermen, hunters and others for whom the outdoors holds a fascination. Recreation facilities available at the lake range from scenic picnic sites to overnight camping. Bowman Haley Dam Marina, located on the north shore of Bowman Haley Reservoir, offers a smoke-free, family environment with a restaurant, bar, convenience store and shower.
