Bowman County ND Agriculture Industry

Bowman county's economy relies heavily on its number one industry - agriculture. Farm and ranch operations are diversified, incorporating both crops and livestock production. Spring wheat is the most extensive crop produced, followed by durum wheat, winter wheat, hay, oats, barley, rye, and sunflowers. With the ever-increasing focus on value-added products in today's ag markets, Bowman County farmers also use corn as a way to add value to their livestock before sending them to market.

Bowman County is home to an ever-increasing cattle industry. It has within its borders some of the most prosperous cattle producers in the upper Midwest.

Beef cattle and sheep are also anSheep photo important part of the economical cycle of Bowman County. With the wide open spaces and ample prairies, the County is ideal for cattle production. The livestock industry dates back to the early 1890's and it remains the second highest income producer. Although the production of beef is king, the area is noted statewide for its large-scale sheep production.

Water Resources

Water is an essential ingredient in the development of any area, and Bowman County is fortunate to lie within three major drainage basins. The County's six reservoirs are used primarily for outdoor recreation, irrigation and flood control purposes. Bowman County will also benefit from a water pipeline, now under construction in southwestern North Dakota, which will deliver abundant water supplies for rural and municipal use to that area.
